My opinion of the product
I have been using the Real Avid Smart-Torq & Driver Master Set for over a year and it is my go-to for when I am working on firearms or need a screwdriver in the shop. Its ergonomics and balance are a treat for my tired hands, making it an excellent tool for detailed work. The incremental torque settings on the Smart-Torq driver and the variety of durable bits cater well to precise tasks.
The LED feature
The LED lighting on the screwdriver is a thoughtful addition, though it has drawbacks.
I have never had a lighted screwdriver perform to my satisfaction. Initially, I thought Real Avid may have finally engineered a solution that lived up to my expectations. However, I’ve noticed that the LED light tends to fade over time, which can be temporarily remedied by tapping the screwdriver, like every other lighted screwdriver I have had. While the idea of illuminating the entire shaft is innovative, the light’s durability has been underwhelming. This aspect was disappointing and detracted from an otherwise robust set of features.
The force assist lever
An odd surprise for me is that I use the force assist handle as a stubby screwdriver more than the full screwdriver. I am not sure if it is just how the stubby fits into my hand or I just don’t need the full length of a big screwdriver.
High quality and robust storage case
One thing that I really like about Real Avid is the time they put into the design and function of their product storage. Most companies go with the standard blow mold case, However, the Smart-Torq & Driver Master Set is hinged and has a locking clear top so you can see what is in the case without having to open it. Adding to the form and function of the case is the rubber feet so it does not slide across you bench, and the swing out peg hook adapter so you can hang it if you want to.
