If you’re a firearm carrier you may have a need for storing extra pistol cartridges. We’ve been using these MTM 18-Round Case-Gard Ammo Wallets for years and they come recommended.

How you handle your firearm and the storage, carriage, and use of it is a personal decision. Outside of the limited statutory regulations on storage, this is a decision for the individual. That goes for ammunition too. When’s something like the Case-Gard Ammo Wallet come in handy? In our opinion, when you’re traveling and need to transport your pistol unloaded for a portion of the trip and/or most of the travel time.

Why use an ammo wallet?

The reason why one may or may not like using an ammo wallet, again, comes down to choice. There’s nothing wrong with transporting your ammunition in the factory packaging, and to be honest, there might be some scenarios where that’s actually a requirement. But what if you don’t need a whole box? What if you’ve destroyed the box from traveling with it so much? What if you just don’t need that much?

The 18-Round ammo wallet is perfect for that scenario where you need to slide your spare ammo — or carry ammo that you just took out of your everyday carry — into something like a backpack pocket. Or another area where there’s spatial constraints.

And that’s why you might not want to lug around a bulky box.

Where I’ve found using an ammo wallet the most useful is if traveling through states that I can’t carry in. You’re staring in a state you’re permitted to carry and you’re ending in a state you’re permitted to carry. But what about the in between?

A perfect example for me would be on a road trip down the east coast. Headed to Virginia to whack some sporting clays with some friends? Well, if you’re in the Northeast and headed south, you will hit some hostile territory. For me, the poison pill is Maryland — well, let’s be honest, Virginia may very well soon be a poison pill and this conversation is moot, but you get the idea.

Keeping spare and/or my carry ammo in one of these MTM ammunition wallets keeps everything organized and protected. It also helps me keep track of how much ammunition I have with me at any given time. The last thing you want on your hands is to misplace some ammo and then get caught on the D.C. beltway with a random piece of adrift ammunition on your floorboard.

The quick and dirty

Pluses: These are inexpensive solutions to keeping your ammunition safe and secure when traveling. Slim profile.

Minuses: Can wear out the hinge over time.

Overall, these are storage solutions that I’ll continue to use for years to come. These wallets are a great accessory and good solution to keeping organized. Until I find something better than these, these are what I’m going to keep my spare carry ammunition in when I travel. They’re light weight, fairly sturdy, and won’t break the bank. I completely recommend using these
