Keeping things exciting while engaged in shooting sports can be difficult at times. We got a chance to review a really great target system that’s been on the market for a number of years. Throom® Targets are a “ricochet free” answer to the baggage that comes with shooting steel.
A family owned business
Throom Targets are manufactured by a family owned business that’s been involved in manufacturing for over 25 years. The company is headquartered in New Jersey, with offices in Middlesex and the manufacturing facility in Farmingdale. A good portion of their story was chronicled in an episode of Riding Shotgun With Charlie and that’s worth a gander if you’re interested–RSWC #197 Erin Mihalik, Throom Targets.

What’s the deal with this target system?
Honestly, these are really cool targets. They are designed to be a safe alternative to shooting steel targets. Throom Targets have the benefit of being reactive, but the bullets go through the self-healing polymer target, rather than ricochet. The only thing they don’t have that’s satisfying about shooting steel is the ding.

What makes Throom really unique is the “self-healing” material that allows for the target to be reused many times. We can’t say that you won’t wear out the targets–because they can be shot out, I’ve seen one impressive example, but that was at a commercial range–but if you’re a regular avid shooter, the likelihood of you and some friends completely destroying the targets is fairly slim.
For high volume shooting situations, check with Throom about options that might be a little more robust than what’s available to the general consumer.

The other thing that makes the system great is that it’s pretty much modular. You buy the system and the brackets interface with standard 2 x 4 pieces of wood. You can cut them to whatever sizes you need them and mount the targets on them however you want. Want the knock down targets to be swinging? Just pop the 2 x 4 with the targets on them upside down. You have options.

Throom puts out a few different target styles. They have knock-down targets, static targets, dueling trees, and hanging targets.
Collaboration with LAZARUS™
Throom has partnered with LAZARUS™ Target Systems to give users a great hardware option. The LAZARUS™ system is a remote controlled motorized target resetting module. We did get a chance to peek at the LAZARUS™ on a Throom plate rack while visiting the Throom booth at SHOT Show® 2025. The system is featured in the below reel we put together.
The LAZARUS™ is not yet available, but it’s speculated to hit the market any day now. We reached out to Throom right before rolling out this review, and they’re excited about the system becoming available soon–but they’re tight-lipped on an exact release date! Perhaps this summer?
Our experiences with Throom

We got a media package from Throom to review about two years ago and have had a chance to test it a bunch of times. The system is cool–hands down. Any friends I took to the range to try the system out, they loved it. Most of the commentary has been that it’s much more fun than just shooting at paper targets.

Since most ranges highly regulate the use of steel and other reactive targets, having Thoom to bring to my gun clubs cuts out the vetting process. No need to get special permission, go through vetting, and or some sort of special training. I just showed up with my system and set it up as close to the backstop berm as possible and let the lead fly.

The downside is that dragging the 2 x 4’s back and forth from the range can be a pain, but to be fair, they are only 2 x 4’s. Set up can be done by one person, but it’s definitely easier with two people. And naturally, if you don’t have the yet-to-be-released LAZARUS™, you have to manually reset the targets.
The quick and dirty

Pluses: Safe alternative to shooting steel. Modular. Affordable. Made in the good ole U.S.A. in the Garden State. Company employees are awesome, down to Earth, cool cats!
Minuses: 2 x 4 system is a little bulky, but makes replacement of damaged parts easy and is an inexpensive solution to getting the system in the casual shooter’s hands.
Overall, we’re team Throom. No doubt. We first met Throom at the National Rifle Association Great American Outdoor Show a number of years ago and just hit it off with the awesome staff–be sure to check out our interview with Erin from Throom, HERE or in the embed below.
The targets are easy to deal with and make a regular session at the range, which can get boring quickly, fresh and exciting again. The targets are wicked durable and anything that you might shoot out or break, is easy to replace.
The line of Throom Target products can be checked out at Amazon and are also available from a whole host of other retailers.
