When out on the town in Sin City, there’s no lack of food, beverage, or entertainment options. A recent trip brought me and my two roommates to Las Vegas, Nevada, and we had a great time. On the “must-do” list of our junior, 7-year-old, adventurer, was to get beef Wellington. “Hmm, an aristocrat,” I thought. The fairer of the roommates hit the web and found the best of both worlds. Gordon Ramsay’s Steak is apparently known for their Wellington, and the little roomie has a Ramsay obsession, for real, “Piss off!”

Location, location, location…

Everything in Vegas is close, right? Those deceiving looks down the Boulevard will have you walking for miles if you’re not careful. Gordon Ramsay’s Steak is located in the Paris Las Vegas hotel/casino, a Caesar Entertainment owned property. Paris is essentially right in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip on South Las Vegas Boulevard. If you’re staying at pretty much any hotel on the strip, it’s not unreasonable to walk to Paris if you desire.

What’s Steak all about?

One of the jokes my fellow adventurers and I had during our Vegas trip was about how original the names of Ramsay’s restaurants were. There was Steak, as we’re discussing now, and others such as Burger, Fish & Chips, and Ramsay’s Kitchen. One doesn’t exactly have to pour over the menu in order to figure out what the specialties are at these minimalist-named restaurants – except maybe Kitchen.

“Chef Gordon Ramsay’s cuts of prime beef are aged to perfection under a program directed by the fiery, internationally renowned chef and his culinary team,” states the Steak webpage. “This posh Las Vegas steakhouse opened with a bang in 2012, where no detail is left untouched.”

“Enjoy the chic, swinging London atmosphere between bites of caviar and decadent roasted Beef Wellington.” Their site notes Steak has a “stylish high-energy vibe … featuring a towering ceiling splashed with the Union Jack flag, the modern steakhouse includes a bar, lounge and two-story dining area, with a chef’s table and private dining rooms also available.”

Steak is a journey

All jokes aside about the names of Ramsay’s restaurants, Steak is more than just a dining establishment, it is a culinary journey. Diners start in Paris Las Vegas but are then transported through Ramsay’s version of the Chunnel. Naturally, Ramsay’s Chunnel connects France to his British eatery.

What’s on the menu?

Steak. The end.

No, not just steak. Yes, the specialty is steak but what are all the offerings?

The steak options:

  • Japanese A5 Miyazaki Striploin
  • American Wagyu in three different cuts
  • Bone-in Ribeye
  • Porterhouse
  • Bone-in New York
  • Tomahawk

Other entrees:

  • Roasted Beef Wellington
  • Organic Chicken Breast
  • Rack of Lamb
  • Pan Seared Salmon
  • Milk Fed Veal Chop

For appetizers, soups, salads, and seafood, there’s an extensive selection to choose from.

There’s a “chilled seafood” menu, where diners can order a two-person shellfish platter, shrimp cocktail, oysters, Alaskan king crab, or Maine lobster. For the more refined pallet, there is a caviar, bjork osetra, that’s available. And there’s also a British ale onion soup, Caesar salad, and farmer’s market salad that’s offered.

Other appetizers:

  • Diver Scallops Risotto
  • Iberico Pork
  • GRS “Gordon Ramsay’s Steak” Sliders
  • Smoked Beef Tartare
  • Hamachi Crudo
  • Warm Breads and Spreads

The ambiance

Steak is a chic restaurant for the “smart casual” diner. The restaurant is not too dimly lit, but has a fine dining elegance to it, with red tones beaming throughout the space. Each dining setting has a leather Gordon Ramsay Steak branded placemat, of course available for purchase.

The wait staff were smartly dressed, wearing button up shirts and the cuffs were adorned with chef Ramsay inspired cufflinks.

Artwork within the space was very Ramsayesque. From his portrait hanging in the main dining area to the mosaic of his face made of miniature pictures of him and a dog, Gordon has a presence.

While you might find every corner of the space to be branded by Ramsay, with either his face, purchasable items, or even the Union Jack – the staff at the restaurant spoke very highly of him.

Our waitress, in particular, said that Ramsay does come in to visit, and when he does, he’s very nice, kind hearted, and polite to the workers. We were disappointed to learn he does not yell “piss off” at everyone or drop f-bombs like mad in his seemingly faux-forced/adopted British accent – as opposed to his native Scottish.

Our trip to Steak

Truth be told, our wee adventurer wasn’t the only Ramsay fan. Naughty confession, I’m a bit of a “Kitchen Nightmares” and “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back” fan myself. If we’re being real honest, the eldest roommate and I pretty much have no issues with any food television, but where exactly she stands on the Ramsay, will just have to remain a mystery.

Getting an opportunity to visit one of chef Ramsay’s restaurants and order one of his signature dishes, made for one of the more memorable meals during our trip to Vegas. The quality of the food and service was top notch.

Warm breads and spreads

We did not want to overdo it in the appetizer department, so we ordered up the warm breads and spreads. The plate of breads came well arranged, with an assortment to choose from. Paired with the three different bread options were “red wine & A5 tallow butter, chimichurri oil, Hawaiian lava salts.”

I would say it was a light and airy appetizer to not fill up on, but eh, we annihilated everything on the plate. The salted butters were flavorful and the chimichurri oil had a good balance of spice.

The three breads included a two-toned pull-apart popover, some crunch lavash bread, and dinner rolls.

The beef Wellington

The beef Wellington is what brought us to Steak in the first place, and the beef Wellington is exactly what all three of us ordered. The meat was cooked perfectly and the doughy crust was not too soggy, nor was it overly crisp.

We got our beef Wellingtons with a side of bearnaise sauce. That wasn’t the right choice for us. It wasn’t offensive, just not our cup of tea.

My little roommate did enjoy his meal, however halfway through his Wellington, he gave up on the pastry. He finished the handsome portion – this was not a kids meal mind you, cha-ching – only leaving behind a small sliver of uneaten dough.

We’re medium rare folks – aristocrats – and the Wellingtons were perfectly cooked to our liking.

While indulging in the Wellington, I noted that it “had a tangy, yet pleasant outer crust beneath the pastry dough.” And that the beef was quite tender.

Roasted mushrooms

Steak has a host of sides served à la carte that are shareable. Mac & cheese, French fries, potato puree, grilled asparagus, sauteed brussels sprouts, and roasted mushrooms were available.

We opted for the roasted mushrooms. They were delicious and surprisingly not biting. After a few bites I noted that they were “snappy and filling” and that they did not have an “overpowered flavor profile.”

Dessert

For dessert I ordered an espresso for myself and we shared one of chef Ramsay’s signature afters. The sticky toffee pudding is a “sweet pudding cake, brown sugar toffee, [served with] brown butter ice cream.”

The espresso was great. Some restaurants have espresso on their menu and it’s a sad affair. The espresso at Steak was richly flavored with a handsome crema. There was a slight acid in the coffee, however, it was not offensive at all.

Chef Ramsay’s sticky toffee pudding was tops. My actual notes from the meal said that the “pudding/cake was a spot on dessert with a uniquely flavored creamy ice cream.” The presentation was unique, with the ice cream served as if it’s a stick of butter. Indeed, the pudding was sticky, and quite moist. The toffee was not over the top sweet, and it was a perfect dessert to share.

The overall experience

Our overall experience at Gordon Ramsay’s Steak left us wanting more. The staff, the food, and the ambiance made for a perfect night. We enjoyed our meals so much that we committed to visiting one of chef Ramsay’s other restaurants in Vegas, Burger – review forthcoming.

Gordon Ramsay built quite a brand and empire for himself, one he should be proud of. We do recommend visiting Steak, if you’re in Las Vegas – or visit one of his other Steak locations in the U.S. The price was not cheap, but for what I’d consider a fine dining experience, it was not too bad. If one would not classify the location as fine dining, the restaurant is more than flirting with that classification, perhaps sharing a French kiss or two, or a bushel and a peck.

We’ll be going out of our way to try out other Gordon Ramsay restaurants in our travels.
