There’s no shortage of need when it comes to staying organized and carting your gear when out in the field. When it comes to fishing, this is one of those areas that can get out of control quickly, especially depending on what kind of fishing you’re doing or where. We got our hands on a really cool tackle box system that’s worth discussing. Last year, EGO fishing released two Tackle Box Sling Packs, and they might be exactly what you’re looking for.
The Pontus and Typhon
The sling bags that were released are two different takes on camouflage. The bags are an intersection of classic utility and nuevo tactical features, both with sharp aquatic inspired patterns. The Pontus, the model we received, has a bright blue profile, while the Typhon has a Sithy black and red coloration.
Kryptek is the designer of the camouflage patterns and EGO notes that “the edgy patterns are inspired by artillery camouflage netting.”
Construction
The bags are sling packs. So you’re either into this type of carry of gear or you’re not. What makes the pack nice is that it’s easy to pop on over the shoulder and take out deep into the field. This thought of heading to semi remote locations was thought about, as the sling straps have a generous amount of padding, giving the user a more comfortable experience. ”The strap itself is padded and wide in profile – not cutting into your shoulder,” EGO’’s release stated. “And features a sturdy quick-clip for releasing.”
Material selection for use in constructing the pack all falls squarely into the synthetic category. Durability is what EGO was focusing on when they put together these packs. “Overall construction” is what EGO stated was “at the heart of the Tackle Box Sling Pack.” Part of maintaining that durability is why they selected ”1000D Nylon fabric with PVC backing – the tough stuff – to minimize wear and tear.” They further tout that the “toughness” and durability of these units “continues with wide-toothed zippers, which are protected by fabric overlays.”
The packs really are well-made. They don’t feel cheap or flimsy. There are a lot of PVC backed Nylon options out there when it comes to gear, and the EGO packs are not made up of that stuff you might get as a “free” gift when you change up your membership level of some organizations.
Multiple zippered compartments and gear carry options
There are several zippered compartments integrated into these packs. They’re perfect for different gear items that you might want to cart into the field with you. EGO notes that the “front sports a trifecta of zippered compartments” and that the “shallow main partition can harbor technology like an iPad, while its two additional mesh zippered slots can hold your smartphone, keys, etc.”
Other compartments “atop the main partition are a pair of full-featured, zippered pouches with ample storage for sunglasses and fishing sundries.”
Part of the appeal to these sling packs would include the expandability of options. The units have “laser-cut MOLLE” and an exterior “elastic water bottle pouch and rod/reel combo holder.”
The 3700-sized tackle boxes are the heartbeat of the operation
While the sling pack tackle boxes have all kinds of great zippered compartments and areas for other items/gear, inside the pack is where the goods are really kept. The packs are designed to accept – and are included with – 3700-sized tackle box/trays. These packs come with and accept three boxes.
As any angler knows, the beauty of the 3700-sized box is that you can mix and match to your heart’s content, leaving endless possibilities when it comes to customization. This also is helpful if one wants to use the sling pack for multiple types of fishing trips. This level of personal control over this fishing tackle system lends the most latitude on being able to fulfill as many needs as possible.
While this system is advertised as a tackle box for fishing, let’s be honest…with the 3700 series boxes being the prime containers utilized, these packs can be used for more than just your fishing needs.
EGO notes the following about the design elements:
Every internal inch of EGO’s Tackle Box Sling Pack is contemplated, too. First, it opens to reveal three included 3700-size utility tackle trays – accommodating more than enough tackle for an excursion. Moreover, the trays are kept snug with a clever securing strap. The underside of the compartment lid is fully-realized as well. With handiness in mind, EGO added four magnetic points for hanging hooks and lighter tackle, as well as a pair of soft strips for holding baits. In aggregate, the area performs as an impromptu workbench for rigging. Simply ingenious…
The quick and dirty
Pluses: Durable. Ample storage. Comfortable. Allows for easy customization. Sharp looking designs.
Minuses: A little on the expensive side, but worth it considering the quality.
The EGO Tackle Box Sling Pack in Pontus and Typhon is a formidable option for fishing gear carry. My mind goes straight to slinging this over the shoulder for an on-the-go situation. Perfect for where you need to hump your gear to your favorite fishing hole, stream, or other location. However, this pack can be just as easily tossed into a boat. Or, it can be utilized when engaging in more intimate fishing experiences such as those had when in a kayak. I’d recommend this product and suspect that I’ll personally be using my sample unit for years to come.
The EGO Tackle Box Sling Pack can be purchased directly from EGO (Pontus or Typhon) or as we prefer, they can be procured through Amazon.
