Having extra battery power on hand is paramount in 2024. No matter what your trade is, where you travel,  or your choice in leisure activities, you will run into those times when you need to recharge your electronic devices. The Poseidon Pro back up power bank battery pack by Dark Energy is a great solution to this quandary.

Dark Energy has a whole line of electronic devices and charging solutions. The Poseidon Pro is their 10,200 milliampere-hour battery pack, but they also have the smaller Poseidon Nano, which has a 3,000 mAh capacity, wireless charging pads, and solar options. Dark Energy further has an extensive line of high quality charging cables outfitted with most popular connections.

Features of the Poseidon Pro

Construction

The Poseidon Pro is robustly designed and does not feel cheap or flimsy. The gate, which is outfitted with a rubber seal that covers the USB ports, is made of plastic and takes a little effort to open with thumb pressure. Opening the port gate will reveal the USB A power outlet port and the USB C power inlet/outlet “fast charging” port. Beneath the gate there’s also an led bulb, allowing the unit to be used as a flashlight if needed.

Capacity

As noted, the power capacity of the Poseidon Pro is 10,200 mAh. This is fairly par for course for battery pack capacity. However, given the technological advances in battery designs over the last few years, battery packs with only slightly larger dimensions might have triple and quadruple the alleged capacity rating. According to Dark Energy, the Poseidon Pro can deliver up to 30+ extra hours of charge to a smart phone and 4+ and 10+ additional hours to laptops and digital cameras respectively.

Weatherproof

Dark Energy advertises the unit to be waterproof IP68 certified and states it “survived a 50 ft drop, a shotgun blast, 1500 lb of crushing force, and 1.5 lb of explosives.” Dark Energy further asserts that the pack has a resilience to varying temperatures and “has been tested in extreme temps from 100 degrees to -15 degrees.”

Dimensions

Dark Energy states that the Poseidon Pro is “the size of most phones,” with the following dimensions:

Measurements:

Height – 6 in ( 15.24 cm)
Width – 3.25 in (8.26 cm)
Thickness – 0.63 in (1.6 cm)
Weight: 9.6 oz (272.19 g)

How’d the Poseidon Pro perform?

A solid go to

I really like this unit. I have a number of different battery packs that I use and this one quickly rose to being neck in neck with the one I’ve been primarily using for years. I’m accustomed to a bulker unit that has a solar charging cell, however, the Poseidon Pro is much sleeker.

Good in and out of the bush

Where the Poseidon Pro really shined for me was not necessarily while out in the bush. However, yes, I did bring the unit along on plenty of outdoor adventures, and we’ll get to those in a minute, but it was indoors where I found the most use for it.

Slips into a pocket

I’d generally rely on a pack that has solar capabilities, which there’s no large benefit to having when indoors when it comes to recharging. The sleeker style, lighter weight, slimmer dimensions, and smaller width of the Poseidon Pro make it easy to slip into a back pocket or have comfortably put in a cargo pocket.

Take it along for journalism stuff

These attributes really stood out when at expositions such as the Great American Outdoors Show. While at the 2024 show, my Poseidon Pro was there helping me keep my phone charged while I was in the press pool reporting on former President Donald Trump giving a speech. The Poseidon Pro is what I relied on to make sure I had a topped off battery to be able to report on a rare occasion.

A solid pack to take when traveling

The Poseidon Pro did not completely take over all my charging needs, but while traveling and staying active outdoors, I did still use it as a primary/secondary pack. If my plans were not too long or remote, it did sit front and center. On those camping and hiking adventures, I’d lean on a solar option first, as to charge the battery pack while a phone was also drawing from it, but the Poseidon Pro was there as a backup.

It’s robust

Another area of note on the Poseidon Pro versus other charging banks is its robust design. I’m not afraid to toss the Poseidon Pro around, and do so. It’s a piece of gear that can be treated like a piece of gear, rather than a more delicate electronic that needs some babying. That is a big benefit.

The quick and dirty

Pluses: Well made robust design. Decent capacity of over 10k mAh. Equipped with USB C and A output power ports. USB C port also facilitates charging of the pack.

Minuses: The price of the Poseidon Pro is a little steep. However this is not a budget, cheaply made product.

I really like this product. Dark Energy has a cool line of products and they all seem to be very well made. The Poseidon Pro has bailed me out a few times when I needed to keep life going, and it’s going to remain a prominent fixture when it comes to gear selection and use. Would I buy a Poseidon Pro? I would. I’d also recommend this product to family and friends. This is a great back up battery pack.
